IndexNow

IndexNow is an open protocol to tell participating search engines instantly about new or changed URLs — one ping, shared across engines, replacing passive crawl discovery. Bing, Yandex, Seznam and Naver take it; Google does not.

Waiting for a crawler is the oldest tax in SEO. IndexNow removes it for a meaningful share of the web: one protocol, one key file, one POST — and every participating engine knows your page changed within moments. It is the rare SEO infrastructure that is free, simple, and actually works as advertised.

The mechanics

You generate a key, host it at /{key}.txt, then POST a JSON list of URLs to https://api.indexnow.org/indexnow (or any engine’s endpoint — they share submissions). The response codes are coarse but honest: 200 accepted, 400 malformed, 422 the key file doesn’t resolve, 429 too many. Discovery is the only promise: indexing decisions remain the engine’s.

What it is for

The payoff splits by site type. New sites with no crawl history gain the most — a domain that Bing has never heard of gets its first visit in hours, not weeks. Time-sensitive content is second: a post that needs to be findable today. For mature, frequently-crawled sites, IndexNow mostly saves recrawl latency on updates — nice, rarely decisive, and never a substitute for decent crawl budget hygiene.

What it is not for

It is not a Google channel — Google never joined, so any tool promising “instant Google indexing via IndexNow” is selling the protocol it doesn’t support. It is not a ranking input: submitting a URL no engine wants does not make them want it. And it is not a bulk channel: engines rate-limit and eventually discount endpoints that repeatedly resubmit unchanged URLs. The correct shape is incremental — ship a page, submit it, keep state. Our sites’ publishing scripts do exactly this on every deploy, which is also the honest pattern for anything automated: the tooling should mirror the discipline, not amplify the noise.

FAQ

What is IndexNow?

IndexNow is an open-source protocol for instant URL submission: you host a key file, then send a POST with changed URLs to any IndexNow endpoint, and all participating engines learn about the change in near-real time instead of waiting for recrawl. Bing, Yandex, Seznam, Naver and Yep participate; Google does not.

Does IndexNow work with Google?

No. Google has never adopted IndexNow — discovery there still runs through sitemaps, natural crawling, and manual inspection in Search Console. Content that needs Google fast should use sitemap ping plus URL Inspection, while IndexNow covers the Bing-family engines.

Does submitting via IndexNow guarantee indexing?

No. IndexNow is discovery, not a ranking instruction: it tells engines a URL changed, and their quality systems still decide whether and where to index it. It removes the crawl-wait from the loop, which matters most for new sites and time-sensitive pages.

How should you submit URLs?

Incrementally: submit each new or changed URL as it ships, from a stateful script that remembers what was already sent. Bulk-resubmitting a whole sitemap every run wastes engine goodwill and hides the real signal — change — inside noise.
